New Study From Oregon State University Indicates Cannabis Can be Used to Fight COVID

A new study from Richard B. van Breemen at Oregon State University Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and co-authors from the Oregon Health & Science University Department of Microbiology & Immunology has been published in the American Chemical Society Journal of Natural Products, and shows that some cannabinoids found in hemp-- the male cannabis plant-- can help block the SARS-CoV-2 virus from binding to the ACE2 receptor and infecting a host. The specific cannabinoids-- CBDA and CBGA-- found in many of our full-spectrum CBD products, was found to increase apelin uptake and bind to the spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, blocking cellular entry of the virus into the host.

CBDA blocks cellular entry of SARS-CoV-2

From the study abstract:

As a complement to vaccines, small-molecule therapeutic agents are needed to treat or prevent infections by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) and its variants, which cause COVID-19. Affinity selection−mass spectrometry was used for the discovery of botanical ligands to the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. Cannabinoid acids from hemp (Cannabis sativa) were found to be allosteric as well as orthosteric ligands with micromolar affinity for the spike protein. In follow-up virus neutralization assays, cannabigerolic acid and cannabidiolic acid prevented infection of human epithelial cells by a pseudovirus expressing the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and prevented entry of live SARS-CoV-2 into cells. Importantly, cannabigerolic acid and cannabidiolic acid were equally effective against the SARS-CoV-2 alpha variant B.1.1.7 and the beta variant B.1.351. Orally bioavailable and with a long history of safe human use, these cannabinoids, isolated or in hemp extracts, have the potential to prevent as well as treat infection by SARS-CoV-2.

The study effectively shows that CBDA and CBGA, when ingested, are capable of binding to the spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and preventing it from attaching itself to the ACE2 receptor. The overall effect appears to be temperature-sensitive, which means that the CBD must be ingested instead of smoked. This makes CBD edibles, such as our CBD Gummies, Tablets and Oregon Saltwater Taffies the ideal delivery mechanism.

We here at Blank Label CBD (and CBD Kind of Day), are constantly championing the health benefits provided by CBD, and this is a great step forward in identifying new potential medical benefits. To celebrate the advances in the sciences surrounding CBD and CBD research, and the the publication of this new study by our fellow Oregonians at OSU and OHSU, we would like to offer a discount to all of our customers.
